We could be putting on weight because we have too much stress in our lives and not enough sleep. How many of us today try to take on far too much? We rush around from pillar to post, in reality struggling to do anything really well. One problem after another seems to need sorting, and tension rises. And so we turn to eating, to counteract the pressure.
To explain this, researchers believe they’ve found a link between feeling over-pressured and reaching for the most satiating food. This is the thinking behind weight gain that is stress related: The stress hormone cortisol is secreted when the body undergoes long periods of stress.
The presence of cortisol encourages a release of insulin (attempting to level out the blood sugar). The insulin release increases our appetite, and in particular our need for foods containing lots of carbohydrates and fats. As we satisfy that need with high fats and carbs, we enjoy the energy high that we were craving so badly.
For a while the stress settles down and we feel satiated. But very soon afterwards, our energy boost plummets! This is due to the insulin taking the glucose from the blood, and storing it in fatty parts of the body such as the waist and thighs.
Therefore we should aim to simplify our lives first if we’re planning a weight loss program. In conjunction with this idea is a theory about sleep and weight management. We currently spend on average less than seven hours a night asleep. It used to be a good hour more than that.
Correspondingly, as the amount of sleep has gone down, obesity levels have gone up. It’s believed that our appetite hormones rise when we’re deprived of sleep. Since we have a longer ‘day time’, the body’s logic is that it needs more food.
Patently we have a more urgent need for energy as we become drained, so yet again we desire saturated fats and carbs. Having eight hours of quality sleep may be just what’s needed to retrain our hunger hormones.
So perhaps one key to weight loss (along with a great eating program of course), is to look at the ways in which we can simplify our lives and enjoy more relaxation. It’s not the end of the world if something has to be left until tomorrow! And so when night-time falls, you’re ready to drift off to sleep at a reasonable time, without fighting the desire for just one more snack!
